Königstein im Taunus, Germany, 2020
Divided between a ground-floor garage and an unused upper floor, this 19th-century half-timbered barn was a hidden gem brimming with potential. The objective was to transform the upper level into a self-contained guest apartment, breathing new life into this historic building. With a total floor area of about 45 square meters, more than half of which was under a 2-meter height line, we effectively had only 20 square meters to work with. By situating the bedroom and bathroom along the taller interior wall and custom-building the kitchenette and wardrobe, we maximized every corner, making the apartment feel spacious despite the limited square meters.
