Königstein im Taunus, Germany 2019
This townhouse, built around 1900 in a Frankfurt suburb, had lost the clarity, proportion, and beauty of its original architecture due to numerous renovations. Our goal was to revive the building's original design and update the interior for modern needs while at the same time making the house energy-efficient. We insulated the facade, installed new windows and a new roof for an efficient building envelope, and added a photovoltaic system for energy production. To stay true to the history of the house, we placed the kitchen, as the central space of the home, bridging between the house's original period of construction, marked by early industrialisation, and the late bourgeois elements like stucco, high baseboards, and paneled doors.
